Joseph Sweeney Obituary

SWEENEY, Joseph D., August 5, 1944 - April 2, 2011. Joseph has lived in Tucson since 1957. He graduated from Salpointe High and the University of Arizona. He never married so he had more time to be an exceptional uncle to his four nephews and one niece, a loyal brother to his two sisters, and a devoted son to his mother whom we lost in 1997. Joseph will be especially missed on Holidays which will not be the same without his unique gifts and his intrepid visits in his old Subaru that he drove at least 600,000 miles crossing his beloved country. Joseph was very passionate about politics and injustice. Instead of just complaining, he tried constantly to solve the problems in our society. He continually ran for public offices, mostly as representative to the US Congress. He started his own law school in order to help many individuals who were disadvantaged and abused by the system and circumstances. He loved the law and was very vocal about injustices. Joseph was laid to rest in East Lawn Cemetery, Tucson. There will be a special Memorial Mass at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Saint's Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 1946 E. Lee St. After the Mass, there will be a "Sharing Memories of Joseph Sweeney's Life Celebration" at La Posada del Valle, 1640 N. Campbell Ave. Arrangements by HUDGEL'S SWAN FUNERAL HOME.

I was a classmate at Salpointe High - knew Joe very well as our 2nd baseman on the varsity baseball team. A tremendous competitor who was a great sport.

I knew Joe. He was a good guy, always had time to speak with me, and I even went to a session at his law school back in '83. I pretty much lost track of him after I moved to Sierra Vista in '86, and just discovered he had passed when I googled his name. RIP Joe, you were a good guy.

Joe Sweeney assisted me with my legal studies. His instruction and encouragement took me from Hearing Officer to Judge Pro-Tem in Pima County. May he rest in peace.

Joe was my classmate since seventh grade at St. Ambrose school. He spoke positively about all people, except for certain politicians.

Dear Sweeney family: I am sorry I will be out of town and unable to attend Joe's Memorial Mass. I will always remember his loyalty to classmates and their families from our St. Ambrose days. Now he enjoys the true love and justice for eternity for which he fought so hard during life. Rest in peace, dear Friend.

I remember Mr. Sweeney, vividly. We shared many talks of our political views. I usually ran into him at shopping centers or high school football games and remember talking to him and sharing the concerns I had for the upcoming of my kids' adult lives and what political dissaray would be in place... I will miss running into him.
My sincerest and deepest condolences to his family.
