Joe was so special, he was one of a kind, he had a brilliant mind and a sharp quick-witted sense of humor. He cared about people and animals, and loved computers. The other day I was remembering one Christmas when he was about 3, everyone was unwrapping their presents, & he & his sisters were sitting on the floor with him. When the girls were done with theirs, we all realized that Joe had stopped after opening his first gift, & was busy playing with it. He was so focused that he forgot about his huge pile of presents. It didn’t take much for him to get completely absorbed in something he liked.
I think about Joe every single day, & I know he’s in a good place. After he passed away, I would find pennies, I called them “pennies from heaven,” & I believe they were a sign from Joe saying he was ok. Sometimes months or years would go by with no pennies, then all of a sudden they would start appearing again. I would pick one up off the ground & say, “Hey Joe.” I didn’t care if anyone saw me going out of my way to grab a penny on the sidewalk or ground. I saved them, & took a whole bunch of them & buried them at his tombstone.
Love you Joe,
Mom

Joe I miss you everyday. I wish you could have met Audrey, your niece. She can tell how amazing you are and wishes all the time she could have met you! I try to share with her your spirit and humor so hopefully it hurts less but I feel like I still dont do you justice!
Lets see. Heres a very Joe childhood memory: when we were kids he used to walk up to me and my sister when we were sitting on the couch. Hed be holding the cat and when he got really close to us hed say cat butt! really loudly. Which would make us turn and look at him. Theyre always be a cat butt right at our faces! Still makes me laugh!

Joe had such an incredible mind, which manifested in his love of computers and his sense of humor. One incident that I love to remember is one year when we came back from Saudi on our yearly R&R, we were visiting Grandma & Grandpa Shields. Grandma had made for Joe a toy made out of socks that were sewn & stuffed to look like a boy. She held it out & probably said, Josey, look what Grammie made for you. She used to call him Josey while Grandpa called him Josephus. As soon as Joe saw the doll, he walked over to her & took it said, Oh, thats Tom Ju-son. We were left speechless. But that was Joe, sweet and remarkable. Love that boy.

Love you & miss you more than ever. Sometimes it doesn't seem real. I saw someone who looked just like you a couple weeks ago, from the back, and I had to just stop and stare and think, was it all a dream? But then he turned around, and then I remembered, you really are gone. But Joe, we will all be together again someday. I have so many memories of you; you are always around me. Thanks for being there. Love you, mom
