Judith Galehouse Obituary

Judith Elaine Galehouse age 70, passed away after a short illness on June 2, 2011 with her loving family and best friend Pam by her side. She was preceded in death by parents Doris and Jack Galehouse; daughter JoAnn; nephew, Scott Galehouse, and brother-in-law, Mike Kollier. She is survived by brother, John (Barbara); sister Barb, and nieces, Jennifer (Alex), Amelia, and Molly. Her nieces fondly remember her as a loving aunt who provided them with many entertaining and educational experiences they will remember for a lifetime. Judith graduated from high school in Doylestown, Ohio and received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Kent State University. She spent her entire professional career helping others, first as a speech and hearing therapist in Ohio and New York and then as a teacher of the deaf for two decades in Oakland, California. Over the years she traveled extensively throughout the US and in Europe and South Africa. After retiring and moving to Tucson, Judith enjoyed swimming, hiking, playing bridge, and cooking. She started a book club that met at her home and became close friends with all who participated. Judith was an intelligent, kind, and compassionate person whose zest for life was an inspiration to all her friends. She was active in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Northwest Tucson where she pursued her love of singing with the church choir. She was a community activist and staunch Democrat who worked for many liberal causes. Judith was always willing to give a helping hand and a warm hug. She will be sorely missed by all of us who knew and loved her. If you want to honor Judith's memory, help someone in need and read a good book.

Judy was such a dear person! I met her in Texas when she adopted my foster child, Joanne. She met the challenge with dignity and zest!

I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to get to know Judy better since moving to Arizona. From her I learned the value of compassion, the importance of self-sufficiency, and the hunger to travel and to experience the world firsthand as often as possible. She is truly an inspiration and my life is so much richer for having known her.

Judith, you were one of the kindest, most welcoming people I have ever known. I will really miss your warm hugs at church and singing with you in the choir. Not to mention the tears during Christmas services. Lisa Ponder-Gilby
