Lionel WAXMAN Obituary

WAXMAN, Lionel Born to Howard and Bella Waxman on September 22, 1938, and bred in Philadelphia, Lionel excelled in all academic achievements. After graduating with honors and being conferred a Juris Doctorate degree from Villanova University in 1964 and mentoring many, he succeeded as a Philadelphia Lawyer, a true compliment. But Lionel's avocation was as a broadcast commentator and syndicated columnist, where he started broadcasting commentary in Philadelphia, and after setting his sights on Tucson in the late 1970's focusing on the real estate market, he continued his prolific writing and daily program "Flashpoint," a much-listened to commentary also heard on radio stations nationwide. Lionel's opinions varied from a satire on knife control published in the Philadelphia Inquirer to a prescient piece on drug wars in Mexico ("You Don't Hear About This on CNN," The Daily Territorial) to his weekly column in Inside Tucson Business. He served as a member of the Philadelphia Board of Law Examiners, the Board of Advisors of Lincoln Bank, and the Board of Trustees of the Nathan Pritikin Research Foundation. In Tucson he served eight years as an appointed member of the Pima County Board of Adjustment. Survived by his two brothers, Marvin and Earl, the latter of whom assisted immeasurably in his support, and grateful for the loving care from Lydia Lopez, Lionel, for years, fought the ravages of Parkinson's Disease. He researched and discussed with others, including professionals, techniques and treatment and, finally, in the end donated his body to further study. This subtle contribution to society is consistent with his time on earth. His personal presence will be missed by many. Lionel passed away on February 21, 2017.
