Mary Lou Doolen Renner

Mary Renner Obituary

RENNER, Mary Lou Doolen, wife of Major General John A. Renner, United States Army (retired), former Commanding General of Fort Jackson, joined her husband in heaven on May 26, 2011, where they will dwell in the Lord's house, together forever. Mary Lou lived a wonderful life filled with service to God and her family. She fought the good fight, she finished the race, she kept the faith. Mary Lou was born in Tucson, Arizona on June 5, 1940, to Berenice and Bryan "Bud" Doolen. In her Catalina High School days, she was the head cheerleader, a tennis athlete and a scholar. Mary Lou also worked as a professional model and was crowned "Livestock Queen" by Tennessee Ernie Ford. Mary Lou attended the University of Arizona and joined Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority where she made lifelong friends and graduated with a degree in primary education. At the University, Mary Lou met the love of her life, John Renner, who played tight end for the Arizona Wildcats. Like a storybook in which the football hero marries the homecoming queen, the two began a 50 year romance that took them around the world. John's Army career spanned three decades. He often attributed his career success to his devoted wife. Mary Lou waited through two tours in Vietnam with two baby girls to care for. She shined his boots, polished his buckles, wrote his speeches, and was a gracious hostess to their Army friends. John and Mary Lou retired to Columbia, South Carolina in 1994. They loved traveling and frequently visited Arizona for reunions with their Wildcat friends. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to celebrate and honor Mary Lou's life are encouraged to give to the charity of their choice to honor her life of volunteer service. Mary Lou is survived by her daughter, Heather Mary Ligon (Colonel John Robert Ligon) and her one and only grandson, John Clayton Ligon; her daughter, Renner Jo Eberlein (Captain Scott Allen Eberlein); her sister, Joanne Montgomery and her brother, Buddy Doolen. John and MaryLou were my very good friends. John and I were pledge brothers in Phi Gamma Delta. My ex-wife and Mary Lou were Kappa Kappa Gamma sisters. I followed John's career over the years as did a number of our fraternity brothers. John and Mary Lou shared dinner with me and my ex-wife in Honolulu a few days before daughter #1 was born. God Bless .

Renner Family: I did not know your dear mother or father personally, but felt drawn to send this message of condolence, since I am native of Tucson, graduated from the University of Arizona and completed Basic Training at Ft. Jackson in 1977. May the happy memories of your parents bring you comfort. God bless.

Dear Family, I remember Mary Lou Doolan as a beautiful upper classman when i was in my freshman year of high school. Her love and caring spirit was evident then. His blessings upon you as walk through this difficult time.

Heather and Renner,
We so loved and enjoyed being with your parents! I always liked hearing your mom's stories not only about both of you and your families but also of Arizona times, Army days and John. He seemed to enjoy them and get as big a laugh out of them as anyone (even when they were about him)! We will miss Mary Lou just as we miss John! She once told me a humorous story (done in her "John voice") where John said "follow me". I have thought of that often in these past few days. Thinking of you with love and sympathy, Nan and Bill Babcock

I was so saddened to hear of Mary Lou's passing from another CHS friend. May your hearts be comforted in knowing she and her husband are together forever in the LORD.

A beautiful pair gone way too early...knew them both at the U of A when John would enter the ROTC coffee room all beat up from superior performance on the football field and later in the Army. Both of you rest well--you have earned it.

Dear Renner Family, Upon reading your mom's obituary in the morning paper, I believe I remember your parents and at least one of you from Hawaii days (1965). Is this possible? Our paths crossed at some point and I am sorry to hear that you have lost both of your parents. They were obviously outstanding people. Sending healing thoughts to you and all who cared for your mom. My condolence to the Renner extended family. I was proud to know Mary Lou from early days in Tucson as well as her father's and brother's successes on the basketball court and Mary Lou's days at the U of A where John and I were fellow FIJIs.

Mary Lou was a class act beauty in all regards!

Sincerely, Ron Johnson Class of 1961, U of A.

The Renner family has been an important part of our lives since the days at Crailsheim, Germany. Mary Lou looked after our kids when we were gone and managed her self-imposed resposibilities as a Battalion and sub-post commander's wife with dedication, efficiency, grace and charm. Serving with the John and Mary Lou team was a real privilege and a career high point.
You always knew that she truly cared about everyone in the unit and was a tireless worker as well as a loyal friend. We will miss her deeply.

We will honor John and Mary Lou at our reunion this November. God Bless them, their family and the United States of America.

To Mary Lou's and General Renner's beloved daughters, your parents were truly among my favorite people! They were members of my Sunday school class and made it lively, warm, welcoming and memorable. Since moving from SC to NC, I've missed them each Sunday. I last saw your mother while visiting SC before your dad passed. No one could make you feel as special as your mom! They lovingly talked about you both and I remember their happy pride whenever you visited our class. May our precious Lord be with you and give you comfort. I am so sorry for your loss .... a loss felt by many.

To Mary Lou's Family, I do not know you all, nor did I know your mother, I do send my sincere sympathy to you. The story of Mary Lou's life and adventures was so vividly written that I enjoyed walking through the time with her. She apparently was a very gracious and splendid lady. Again, the story of her life was so enjoyable and my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
