Monroe S. Birkeland Jr.

BIRKELAND, Monroe S. Jr. 89 of Waterford, Ohio died Friday, April 1, 2011 at his home. He was born May 9, 1921 in Chicago, Ill. Son of Monroe S. Sr. and Teresa Birkeland. He had been a business owner and in 1955 he and his brother had the Service Master Franchise for the State of Arizona. He retired in 1985. He graduated from Austin High School in Chicago, Ill. He served during WWII in the Merchant Marines and his boat was sunk by a torpedo in the Mediterranean Sea. He was a member of the American Legion. He was married April 27, 1949 to Elaine Lobstein. She died January 5, 2003. He is survived by a son, Timothy Birkeland and his wife Barbara of Waterford; two grandchildren and six great- grandchildren; a brother, Steven Birkeland and his wife Shelley of White Bear Lake, Minn. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a sister, Barbara Nelson. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
