Dr. Richard Bates "Dick" HINE

HINE, Dr. Richard Bates "Dick" succumbed to cancer resulting from Lynch Syndrome January 2, 2018; at the age of 88.  He was predeceased by Patricia, his beloved wife of 66 years.  Dr. Hine was Professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Arizona from 1967-1990.  Prior to that, he was on the faculty of the University of Hawaii, and held corporate positions at DuPont, Del Monte and Bechtel.  Through Hine Consulting, and in collaboration with the UN, he addressed challenging plant diseases with growers in the Southwestern US, Mexico, Central and South America, and Asia.  He received the lifetime achievement award in Plant Pathology from the American Phytopathological Society in 1990. Dick and his twin sister, Katherine "Patty" Hine Shaha of Salt Lake City, UT were born June 2, 1929 in Beverly Hills, CA.  Dick's quick wit and knack for story telling were evident at an early age, and remained vibrant throughout his life.  He graduated from Beverly Hills High, and earned his bachelors degree from UCLA.  He married his college sweetheart, Patricia Maynard, December 26, 1951.  Dick was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1952 and served a two-year tour in Japan.  Upon his return, he earned his PhD in Plant Pathology from UC Davis and embarked on a distinguished scientific career.  He was passionate about all things "UofA", and cherished the friendships built up throughout his life.  In addition to his sister, Dick is survived by his children, Katherine Hine Sementilli (Philip), Bill Hine (Barbara Salerno), Ruth Hine (Eric Musto), and Richard Hine; and two adored granddaughters, Abigail and Emeline Hine Musto.   The family has held a private celebration of Dick's life, and requests that remembrances be sent to the University of Arizona Foundation / UA Cancer Center.
