Richard ROSE Obituary

ROSE, Col. Richard Gary (USAF/Ret.) Richard Gary Rose flew west October 18, 2016 in Tucson, AZ after a long battle with cancer. An only child, Rich was born to Elmo and Annabelle (Wilson) Rose on January 18, 1942 in Albany, CA. Upon his 1959 graduation from Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, CA, Rich continued his education at the University of California at Berkeley. He graduated in 1964 with his BS in Forestry and Land Management and received his USAF ROTC commission. Rich attended pilot training at Williams AFB, Chandler, AZ, and received pilot wings in 1966, Class 66-E. During 14 years on active duty, Rich held a variety of positions. He was deployment Commander to Miramar NAS, CA, for several Dissimilar Air Combat Training efforts supporting the Navy's Top Gun Air-to-Air School. During the Vietnam War Rich was assigned to Thailand twice - once as an A-1 Sandy Pilot and then as an A-7 Sandy. With more than 200 combat missions he logged over 750 combat hours and was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses and 13 Air Medals. In 1979 Rich joined the Arizona Air National Guard, Tucson. During those years, he was assigned as Chief of Standardization and Evaluation, Chief of the Fighter Weapons School, F-16 Assistant Director of Operations, Chief of Wing Weapons and Tactics and as Logistics Commander. Rich's 32 year career garnered him status of Command Pilot with over 8000 total hours, with 7000 hours in five single-seat, single engine Free World Fighter aircraft. Upon retirement, Rich began a second career with Boeing and Lockheed Martin supporting fighter training and development, working at Luke AFB, Goodyear, AZ and again at Tucson Air National Guard. In actual retirement, Rich enjoyed traveling, following his favorite sports, the cabin in Greer and his family. Rich faced his diagnosis of skin cancer courageously and spent more than a decade traveling to M. D. Anderson Cancer Clinic in Houston, TX. Rich is survived by his wife, Janice (Norris) Rose; daughter, Julie (Jay) Hotchkiss of Brookings, SD; granddaughters, Madelynn and Bethany; son, Rick of Dalyellup, Australia; grandsons, Michael and Jake; stepchildren, Bo Mate (Jennifer) and Alison (Jeff) Smith and step-grandchildren, Savannah, Donte, Devon, Dannica, Emily, Aiyana, Rashawn. A Memorial Service will be Friday, November 11, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., St. Mark's Methodist Church, 1431 W. Magee Rd., Tucson. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to M.D. Anderson Cancer Clinic, P. O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486 or the 162nd Family Readiness Group, 1650 E. Perimeter Way, Tucson AZ 85706.

Dear Janice: The world will be a lesser place without Rich. He will be remembered for his energy, his clear thinking and most of all his loyalty to his friends. I remember many good times we shared, songs we sang and toasts we made. Rich will be missed and remembered as a good friend and a great fighter pilot. AL

Mrs Richard Rose and family,
Margaret and I were very sorry to hear of your loss. Richard and I were in "sister" flights Class 66-E at "Willie" AFB. We did not reconnect again until the Class 66-E reunion at Mesa in 1993. Our son, Keith, also flew F-16's for the Arizona Air National Guard and he has kept us informed when he would talk with Rich and he always spoke highly of him. Again, we are sad for your loss.

Hondo....

You will be so missed by all of us, especially those who had the privilege and honor to be on your wing. The words of "High Flight" seem to be for you...

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings... Put out my hand, and touched the face of God"

We have your six Hondo!!!

I knew Rich for a lot of years, and for a while he was my boss. We in the maintenance business knew him to be one of the best guys to loan our airplanes to for a few hours. He never failed to thank the crew chiefs and mechanics or take a genuine interest their work. He was smart, deliberate, and thoroughly respected by those who knew him best. He left too soon. I hope his family takes some comfort in knowing what a positive impact he made on us.

I knew Rich as my patient for years at M D Anderson. He is the bravest man I know. He and Janice became our friends over the course of his visits to Houston. Kind and generous, with a wry sense of humor, Rich is loved and missed. I am very thankful to be his friend, and to know this unique couple.I look forward to seeing him again, where there is no more pain or sorrow, no disease nor any tears.I have great memories of our conversations together, at very difficult times, and have daily reminders of his and Janice's generosity. I literally think of them everyday, and always will, as daily I see visible reminders of their friendship. I love this picture. He looked good on the outside too.

Rich Rose skill and courage saved my life in Laos 1969. As Zorro 51 he hit a AAA gun and covered me until I could fly out of an enemy airfield under heavy fire. Rich got no award for this action, always quiet and humble. He has been a close friend for 46 years. He IS world's best fighter pilot. Happy landings Rich. Raven 48 Mike Cavanaugh in Thailand
