LYONS, Richard W. The family of Richard W. "Rick" Lyons is sad to announce the passing of our beloved brother, uncle, great-uncle and great- great-uncle on December 12, 2016, at age 71, after a long illness. He will be greatly missed by his sister, Nancy (Gene) Hobday of Lake Havasu City and his brother, John D. (Julie) Lyons of Oakland, California, as well as nieces and nephews, Rachel, Ross (Marlene), John (Lezlie) and Melissa (Mark) and great- nephews and nieces, Craig, Ricky (Kirsten), Geoffrey, Dayna, Hallie, Taylor, Mark, Sara, Joshua and Nick and great-great-niece and nephew, Brooklyn and Landon. He will be remembered for his intelligence and his kindness; he was a gentle soul. Rick was born in Tucson on September 23, 1945, and was the son of John D. Lyons and Nan E. Lyons (née Shurtz). He graduated from Rincon High School where he was student body president, and from the University of Arizona where he was selected to the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi academic honoraries and was very active with the Model UN. After two years at Stanford Law School he returned to Tucson and ultimately joined the Pima County Assessor's Office in 1970. In 1994 he was elected Pima County Assessor, and served in that capacity for a decade, retiring in 2004. He was a hiker, regularly doing a part of the John Muir Trail in the Sierra Nevada, and an audiophile with a large collection of classical and opera records. He maintained an abiding interest in local and national politics all his adult life. Rick's family plans to organize a remembrance gathering after the New Year.
