Sarah NICEWANDER

NICEWANDER, Sarah Schneider 92, passed away at home July 31, 2017 in Tucson, AZ after a short illness. She was born November 27, 1924 at home in Hopedale, IL to Harvey and Esther Schneider. She was predeceased by her husband, Merle and son, Douglas. Sarah is survived by her daughter, Nancy Schwarzkopf (Don); grandsons, Andrew and Gregory Schwarzkopf; sister, Mary Baumgardner and brother, Herman Schneider. Sarah graduated from Illinois State Normal University in 1946 and began her teaching career as a Business Education teacher at Wellington HS, Wellington, IL. After marrying Merle in 1947 she taught first grade in Lansing, IL before starting their family. Sarah lived in Highland and Schererville, IN for many years and 'snowbirded' in Tucson, AZ for 30 years. She moved full time to Tucson in 2014. Sarah enjoyed traveling with her sisters on cruises to many locations. Her most memorable cruise was in Greece where their ship sank off the coast of Santorini. Sarah was active in the Home Extension Club and Engineer's Wives for many years in Indiana. All her life she was an avid bridge player and belonged to the American Contract Bridge League as a Ruby Life Master. She played at the Adobe Bridge Club in Tucson, AZ. Sarah's other passion was education. She supported The Dollars for Scholars program in her home town for many years. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Highland Dollars for Scholars, 9135 Erie Street, Highland, IN 46322. Sarah donated her body to the UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA for medical teaching and research. There will be no services at this time.
