Virginia Johnson Obituary

Virginia W. Johnson died February 7, 2011 in Oro Valley, AZ. Born in Altoona, PA on April 24, 1923; she was the daughter of Percy J. and Violet Cox Williams. She graduated from Altoona High School and Westminster College, New Wilmington, PA and received her M.A. in Religious Education from Hartford Seminary, Hartford, CT. In 1949 she married Charles A. Johnson, who survives, along with two children, Joanna Downing and Gregory Johnson; and two grandchildren, Corey Charles and John David Downing. Virginia was an elementary teacher in public schools for nearly 30 years. Following retirement, she was a volunteer teacher. She loved music and sang in church and community choirs. She was an avid golfer. A member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), Virginia served on various boards and committees, including the Board of Directors of Friends Fellowship Community Retirement Home and Friends United Meeting Board of Trustees, of which she was chairman for several years. Memorial Services will be held Monday, March 14, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Oro Valley United Church of Christ. Memorial gifts may be made to the Oro Valley United Church of Christ, 1401 E.
