I'm a few years late and don't know if anyone will read this but for some reason Bills name popped into my mind today. I was sorry to hear of his passing as he was my favorite professor at the U of O in the early 1970's. The comments below aptly describe him better than I could. I agree, he was a wonderful person who took an interest in me which I always appreciated. I'm sure after 6 years you still miss him.

Bill was one of the most important people in my life. I'll never forget him and I'll be always grateful to him and Joyce for all they have done for me and my family.

Jim and I were blessed to meet Bill and Joyce in 1981 when we moved to Tucson. Bill was a delight...warm, funny and genuine. We were privileged to share many times with him and Joyce over the years. We will miss him so very much.

So sorry for the family's loss. May God strengthen you as you stay close to friends and family and recall fond memories of your loved ones. In the days ahead, may you find comfort in the God of loyal love and in the promise found at John 6:40.

I think about Bill often in the many years since my LA graduation. Bill was very much my guiding star during my years in the department. I always marveled at his ability to stay positive, his sense of humor and ever-so-subtle jokes that few would get (you remember that twinkle in his eye?), and his infectious love and deep knowledge of his field. He was the bulwark of the department. Looking for a moment of sanity during the chaos of any given day, I would go and plop down in his office chair. He always had a bon mot that would illuminate the larger picture, the greater good of what Landscape Architecture was meant to be and do, and would always cheer me up again. Bill always offered us but never pushed the opportunity to seek beyond the obvious and surficial. I will always love him and revere him for his kindness, his wisdom, and his gentle leadership. His challenge to learn, to think deeper, and do the right thing always leads me onward.
From a distance I send love and deep hugs to Joyce, Debbie, Jenny, Catherine and the grandkids.
