Zachary Smith Obituary

Zachary Smith was called home to the Lord February 18, 2011 after a lengthy illness. Zach, as he was known to the many friends who knew him, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1947 and placed in an orphanage. Zach spent his childhood moving from foster home to foster home until he was able to strike out on his own to make a life for himself. After a career in sales, Zach relocated to Tucson where he started a ministry on the lower East Side until advanced diabetes forced him to give up his parish and church activities, and retire to managing a campground. Zach was a strong advocate for the poor and was involved with the community food bank, and spent Sundays serving food to homeless and poor. He enjoyed the outdoors and climate of Arizona. He loved telling stories of his adventures while camping and hiking in the Tucson mountains and prospecting as a hobby until his illness. Zach Smith leaves a wife, Betty of Washington and a son and many friends. Special thanks to the medical staff at UPH University Physicians Healthcare at Kino for their kindness and care of Zach. His wish would be that people help each other. Donations will be welcomed at the Tucson Community Food Bank. For additional information call 520-574-0157 ask for Dale or John.
