Mary Helen Melton 77, of Tucson, AZ passed away peacefully on February 19, 2014. Born in 1937, in Los Angeles, CA she moved to Tucson in 1945, where she attended Tucson High School excelling in the study of business and playing on the basketball team. During her 37 years as Executive Director Tucson Youth Development, she pursued her passion to ensure that all children were afforded access to educational and employment opportunities. She served on the Arizona Commission that created Arizona Charter Schools and oversaw the opening of Pima County's first charter school, as well as securing funding enabling the school to have a permanent home. She received the Mujer 2000 "Woman on the Move" award, along with numerous recognitions. Arizona has twice proclaimed a day in her honor. Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Martin L. Melton, and is survived by her devoted children, Laura Contreras (Humberto), Michael Melton (Lisa) and Kathleen Perales (Michael); six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as five siblings and a large extended family. Visitation and Rosary to be held from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 2014, at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL and Mass to be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Sacred Heart Parish.
