She subsequently received an M.S. in Education from Buffalo State University and taught English and home ec for several years. She sang baritone with the Tucson Desert Harmony Sweet Adelines chorus for 20 years and played in her church handbell choir until her final illness. Other interests included knitting and gardening. When she was 85 she took up loom weaving and basket making. Mildred loved to be with people and was interested in almost everybody and everything. She read two newspapers every day and participated regularly in water aerobics, yoga and Silver Sneakers classes at her local gym. She was an active member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Tucson for almost 40 years. She and Lamar drove their camper all over the U.S. including Alaska, visiting friends and relatives along the way. They made multiple trips to Europe, with highlights being the passion play at Oberammergau and visiting relatives in Sweden. While in her 80s she took cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska and to England on the Queen Mary 2. She endured the last few months of her life with grace, being hit with multiple health issues, including a fractured vertebra and cancer. She died peacefully on August 3, 2010 in Tucson surrounded by family. She was 89.
