E. Miles Johnstone 9/9/1923 - 9/16/2010 Popular English teacher for many years in Tucson Unified School District No. 1 E. Miles Johnstone died at age 87 on September 16, 2010, after suffering a stroke in June. Miles taught for nearly 30 years in Arizona schools, including Tucson's Wakefield and Townsend Jr. High Schools and Catalina High School, where in addition to English he taught Modern Plays. It was not unusual for former students to approach him and his family at local restaurants to express their enjoyment of his classes. Some students even said he inspired them to pursue a teaching career. In addition to teaching, he acted in several plays at Pima Community College, the Arizona Theater Company and the Invisible Theater. Miles was born in Mandan, ND on September 9, 1923. His family moved to Seattle when he was a toddler. After serving in the Navy during WWII, he earned a BA degree at the University of Washington in Political Science and earned his teaching degree at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. Later he obtained a Masters in Education from the University of Arizona. His survivors include his wife, Lois, of 61 years; his son, Bryan, (Jeanne); grandson, Cameron, and granddaughter, Julia of Somerset, NJ; daughter, Laurel (Jeff) of Tucson; and sister, Geraldine Valaas of Modesto, California. Funeral arrangements will be handled by ADAIR DODGE FUNERAL HOME. Private family services are being arranged.
