Dorothy Hunt Finley Dorothy passed away peacefully on February 20, 2013 at Freedom Inn surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born on a ranch in Douglas, AZ on July 13, 1920. She is preceded in death by her husband and soul mate of 35 years, Harold; her parents, Jack and Sally and sisters, Nell and Bess. Dorothy grew up on Arizona ranches until at the age of 14 when her family sent her to high school in Pasadena, CA. She returned to Tucson and attended the University of Arizona where she graduated with honors from the College of Education. During that time, she belonged to many organizations and was a proud Letterwoman. At the age of 40, she obtained her M.S.Ed from the U of A. Her husband started the family beer business in Fairbanks, AZ in 1948, then they moved to Tucson in 1953. At this time, Dorothy worked both in the business and supported the family by teaching for Pueblo Gardens in District One. Excelling in teaching, she quickly moved from to helping teacher to Principal for White and Schumaker Elementary Schools. In 1980, she retired to travel the world, at the request of Harold. Upon his death in 1983, a new chapter opened in Dorothy's life and she worked at Finley Distributing Company until selling the business in 2008. During this time, she became a dynamic community advocate, working tirelessly for U of A, Davis Monthan A.F.B., and countless children's and ethnic groups. She won numerous awards including Woman of the Year 1989, U of A Outstanding Citizen Award, U of A Alumni Service Award, Tucson Business Hall of Fame, Fisher Distinguished Civilian Humanitarian Award given by Air Force Chief of Staff at the Pentagon and her beloved Miller Highlife Lifetime Achievement Award. Dorothy is survived by her son, John (Audrey); granddaughter, Jessica (Daniel); grandson, Alexis (Brigette); brother, Tom (Mary); nephews, Tom and John (Stephanie). The family would like to thank all her caregivers for the loving kindness they provided her during the last several years. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a community . A Celebration of Life Service will be on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at St Phillips in the Hills Episcopal Church on the corner of River Road and Campbell. All are welcome to attend.
