Philip Boal 56, beloved brother of Winnie and Tom Boal, uncle of Sarah Boal, brother-in-law of Jila Boal, and cousin of many, died of a heart attack Saturday afternoon, July 6, 2013, while swimming in Lake Charlevoix, one of his favorite spots in the world. Philip was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 11, 1957 and was 56 years old. He lived in Tucson, Arizona and had a vacation home in Charlevoix, Michigan. Philip is also survived by his two dogs, whom he adored, Maggie and Homer. His extra special dog, Max, passed away a few years ago. Philip studied communications at Columbia College in Chicago and distinguished himself as a video editor, working the last eight years as a senior editor at the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) at its headquarters in Tucson, Arizona editing many of its videos, including many of those that were used each Labor Day for the annual Telethon. Previously, he was one of the first employees of the Home and Garden TV channel in Knoxville, Tennessee. Philip played a wide variety of outdoor sports from baseball (he was a tragic Chicago Cubs fan) to windsurfing. One reason he loved living in Tucson was the ability to play outdoors all year round. He regularly hiked the mountains all around Tucson. Philip played all manner of land sports, but his favorite was tennis. He was an avid tennis player in Tucson, playing in several leagues and helping his teams win many victories. On the Thursday before he died, he won the annual family 4th of July tennis tournament on the shore of Lake Charlevoix, sporting a huge grin - winning the family tournament was just as important to him as winning a league tournament. He loved Charlevoix, and he was loved in Charlevoix. 2013 marked the 100th year of the purchase of this special property on Lake Charlevoix by his grandparents, Ayres and Lesley Boal, and the extended family had gathered to celebrate the occasion. One consolation was that Philip was able to reconnect with so many members of his extended family this last week. Philip's untimely death has greatly saddened his immediate family and many cousins and friends, who will miss him dearly. He was a special man, and we are all privileged to have had him in our lives. Philip's ashes will be spread in the place he loved, Charlevoix, and also buried next to his parents, Tom and Pauline Boal, at Christ Church in Winnetka, Illinois. Memorial Services to celebrate Philip's life will be held in Charlevoix on July 9, 2013 and in Winnetka, Illinois and Tucson, Arizona on dates to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association would be appreciated. Arrangements by WINCHESTER FUNERAL HOME.
