René Mario Contreras René Mario Contreras, 75, of Lynchburg, originally from Tucson, Arizona, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. He was the loving husband of Linda Lee Henning Contreras for 36 years, of Lynchburg, Virginia. Born August 3, 1938, in Tucson he was a son of the late Gustavo Contreras and Carlotta Rivera Contreras. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ana Contreras and two brothers, Gustavo and Alberto Contreras. René proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was a gifted Silversmith by trade and his love of the craft of silversmithing and creativity produced beautiful and unique custom-designed jewelry from belt buckles to wedding sets. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved nature. As an outdoorsman, he enjoyed hiking the Sonoran desert and surrounding mountain ranges (Catback Mountain) in Tucson with his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his wife he leaves to cherish his memory eight children, Renée Anne Casillas of Montgomery, AL, Franc Contreras of Mexico City, Mexico, Carla M. Goodhart and husband, Jaime, Toni Urcadez and husband, Eddie, Jessica Monroe, Laurie Portillo and husband, Eddie, Tim Contreras all of Tucson, AZ and Margaret Bolton and husband, Patrick of Los Angeles; 15 grandchildren, Mark Casillas (Layla), Regina Conradi (Allen), Eddy and Zoe Urcadez, Gilbert, Matthew and Damian Portillo, Jillian, KylieAnne, Caitlyn, Piper, Kendall Monroe, Nathan and Jocelyn Contreras and Aura Contreras; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kelsey Casillas and sister, Yolanda Gil and husband, Louie of Tucson and many other relatives and friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Tucson, Arizona at 11:30 a.m., Friday, March 28, 2014. Immediately following burial at Holy Hope Cemetery, a Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish Hall. The family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to the staff on 2 West and social worker, Amanda Baldwin, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke for their constant respect, care and love. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in memory of René Contreras to either El Rio Community Health Center, Tucson, Arizona, or St. Monica Catholic Parish, Tucson, Arizona.
