Susan McLaughlin Fitts

TUSCALOOSA Susan McLaughlin, 63, of Tuscaloosa, departed this life September 28, 2013. Susan left us, as she lived, with intensity, spark and an abiding hope that her Lord would sustain her. She loved family and she loved relationships. Even to the end, she had a good word in her heart and daily professed praise for the Lord her maker.

Susan was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she graduated from Myers Park High School then ventured to Bradford College and New York University, before graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There she met her husband Stephen Noble Fitts, Jr. They returned to his hometown of Tuscaloosa and raised three children: Stephen Noble, III (Rebekah), Jonathan Lucas (Leah) and Rebekah Elizabeth, who survive her.

She is survived by her husband, her sister, Patricia McLaughlin Toher of Durham, N.C.; her parents, Bettie and Ted McLaughlin of Durham, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Libby, Noble and Murphy Fitts.

Susan invested deeply in her community and her church family. She faithfully served as a teacher and women's leader over the years in the church she helped found, Trinity Presbyterian. She was instrumental in forming, and served on the board of, LOVE, INC., a Tuscaloosa mercy ministry. She was also active in the Junior League of Tuscaloosa, the Kettledrum and various other social organizations. Susan taught art at Tuscaloosa Academy for nine years and is remembered fondly by her former students and fellow faculty for her friendship, inspiration and creativity.

We lost Susan earlier than expected; but in this, as in all things, we trust in Him who works out His purposes in wisdom and love. Truly, hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured into our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Trinity Presbyterian Church Missions Program (205-391-2111) or Hospice of West Alabama (205-523-0101).

Trinity Presbyterian Church will conduct a memorial service on Wednesday, October 2 at 2:30 PM. The family will be receiving visitors at the church beginning at 1 PM.
