William W. Smelley
COKER William W. Smelley, age 86, of Coker, died April 24, 2013, at Honors Way VA Hospice. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Mount Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Tindle and Bro. Pinion officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Sanders Smelley Vaughn; his father, George Thomas Smelly; his brothers, Patton Smelley, Richard Smelley, John Henry Smelley (Lucille), his sisters, Maudie Smelley, Elizabeth Smelley, Nanay Smelley Wheat (R. Bolton), Lubell Smelley Kelley (Hubert); his wife, Hazel Blackwood Smelley; and his brother-in-law, A. L. Kelley.
Survivors include his sisters, Pauline Smelley of Coker and Kelley of Pace, Fla.; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; special friend (like a brother), Robert Lancaster; special cousin, Jerry Smelley; and very dear friend, Jim Chaffin.
William joined the Navy at the age of 17, where he received many awards. He married Hazel Armistead in 1950 and had 48 happy years. He worked at Bryce Hospital, then went on to school and became an electrician at Reichold Chemical. He spent 15 years caring for his wife with Alzheimer, and the last year serving the Lord at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, visiting nursing homes, working at church, and always being there for anyone that needed help.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Roy Kelley, Frank Kelly, David Kelley, Mike Kelley, Eddie Smelley, Charles Smelley, Junior Smelley, Ralph Wheat and Billy Wheat, who cannot be there because he is fighting his battle with cancer.
Honorary pallbearers are his Sunday school class, training union class, the Mount Olive Baptist Choir, and deacons of the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Honors Way VA Hospice staff and doctors, and Mount Olive Baptist Church.
