Hugh McDaniel Obituary

VANCE Hugh Don McDaniel, age 69, of Vance, died Dec. 30, 2009, at home. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Tuscaloosa Academy. There will be a private family entombment in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Memory Hill Gardens with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tuscaloosa Academy.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra McDaniel; sons, Brian Scott McDaniel and Steven Lee McDaniel; brother, Herbert "Herky" McDaniel; parents, Huey Don McDaniel, and Sally Ashcroft McDaniel; and grandchildren, Charles Graene McDaniel, Jamie Renae Cagle, Lauren Grace McDaniel, and Emily Faith McDaniel.

Some knew him as Buddy, others as Coach Mac. Either way, Don McDaniel was loved by everyone he met. Don entered the Navy after graduating from Tuscaloosa High School in 1957, serving in the Cuban Missile Crisis blockade.

After sailing the Seven Seas, Don came home to marry his high school sweet heart, Sandra Bethra Richards. While working as an operator at Gulf States Paper Mill, however, Don discovered his second love, coaching.

Don volunteered with the Boys Club of Tuscaloosa, leading the Oakdale Raiders to the city championship game played in Denny Stadium. A few years later, Don became the head coach of West End Christian's JV Football Team. Family and friends believe every police officer in Tuscaloosa County played for Coach Mac at one point because he never received a speeding ticket despite deserving one or two over the years.

When Gulf States closed its mill in 1978, Don was an unemployed husband and father of two. He built swimming pools while attending night school, and eventually earned his Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Alabama.

For 27 years, Don was a faculty member of Tuscaloosa Academy. He taught history, geography, and physical education. He also coached football, ladies basketball, track and field, and ballroom dancing to elementary school students. As a football coach, he won more than 100 games. In Track and Field, he coached nearly 50 individual state- champions. TA Track won 12 team state championships. The Cross Country Team has never lost in state competition.

Don McDaniel's private passion was reading and writing history. He wrote books on the Civil War, southern cooking, and childhood physical education. He was a U.S. Olympic Track and Field referee, and a Civil War re-enactor. He was known for his delicious Navy Bean soup, and was keeper of the family's century-old bar-b-que recipe.

He loved his grandchildren, bragged on his sons, and was faithful to his wife.

Don McDaniel, Buddy, Coach Mac will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Pallbearers will be Don McNabb, Dr. Sam Gambell, Dr. Barry Peterson, Roy Dyer, Sr., Buddy Sumner, Kelly Bruce, and May Wilson.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Don McDaniel Memorial Track Fund c/o Tuscaloosa Academy.

In the few years that I have known Don in the 5th Alabama Band I considered him to be a close friend. He was always the first person and often the last person I saw at practice. His knowledge of things concerning the War Between the States was just a portion of his numerous interests. I learned something new in every conversation I had with him. I never saw him in an ill mood and he was cordial to everyone he met. I will miss his booming voice and the fellowship I enjoyed with him at both practice and events. May his Bass Drum continue to maintain the rhythm in a Heavenly Band.

Don, was just special...and he made everyone feel special. To me he was a father figure, a friend. I don't know what our band is going to do without him! He was a leader, a take charge kind of person...who will be very much missed! Sandra was also very much involved with the band selling our CD's and fans. A fond memory was Don telling people the difference in a southerner and a yankee's use of our fans. And at historical reinactments he made sure if any black people were present that he let them know just how many blacks wore the southern uniform during the war. If ya'll don't know it was thousands.
Don you will be missed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Mac was a great encourager to all the kids he coached and even those he didn't coach. My son Alan ran cross country and track for Escambia Academy since the time he was in the 6th grade. Coach Mac was a true encourager to Alan and Alan became good friends with many of the TA runners - especially Garrett McGieffert. Coach Mac was a Christian role model and taught that to all his athletes - healthy and positive competition. He brought out the best in his athletes and all those he came into contact with. He has won his race - 1 Corinthians 9:24 "Run in such a way that you may win."

In the short time I have been a member of the 5th Alabama Don was always one of the first members I saw when I arrived at rehearsal. He was always sitting by the bass drum greeting you as you came in with a smile. As I grew to know him I learned that he was very outgoing and willing to help in anyway possible, loved coaching at Tuscaloosa Academy, loved his grandchildren, children and his wife dearly. Don will be missed.

Don was a friend to all and a good family man. I spent many hours over the years with Don at Civil War reinactments as members of 5th Ala Inf. reg band. Don continously talked about his grandchildren, his sons and his varied and many interests.Don's contributions to the band will be greatly missed. He made each performance special involving others and sharing his great personality with all. (This was evidenced in one way by his inviting the tykes to come beat on the bass drum.)
Sandra you and the family are in our prayers.
