UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. | Albert Baernstein II, died quietly at his home, in University City, Missouri, on June 10, 2014, after a long illness.
Al was born April 25, 1941 in Birmingham, Alabama and grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, son of Albert (Bunky) Baernstein and Kathryn (Sis) Wiesel Baernstein. He attended the University of Alabama, earned an A.B. from Cornell University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He taught at Syracuse University from 1968-1972, then moved to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was Professor of Mathematics. He retired in 2011.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judith (Haynes) Baernstein; two daughters, Prudence Renee (Wietse de Boer) of Oxford, Ohio and Amy (Melanie Tratnik) of Seattle, Washington; four grandchildren: Sylvia and Arthur de Boer of Oxford, Ohio, and Cleo and Nora Baernstein of Seattle, Washington; and a sister, Alice Baernstein Pollingue Kirby (Warren Kirby), of Augusta, Ga.
A memorial service was held on June 14, 2014 on the Washington University campus.
