ALICEVILLE | Carey Shelfer, age 76 of Aliceville, Alabama passed away Monday, February 17, 2014. Carey was born January 3, 1938 in Oklahoma City, Okla. His family moved to Birmingham and he attended Shades Valley High School graduating in 1957. Carey then served in the U.S. Marine Corps before attending the University of Alabama where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. He earned a BS degree in Business Administration in 1962.

Upon graduation from college, Carey enjoyed a 17 year career with American Can Company as a Regional Sales Manager. His career started in Dallas, and took him to New Orleans, Atlanta and returning to New Orleans. He relocated his family back to Alabama in 1977. He acquired The Boligee Mercantile Company and later ended his career with the Eutaw Housing Authority.
He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Aliceville. He was also a member of the Aliceville Rotary Club. Carey enjoyed many hobbies but most passionately enjoyed traveling, cooking, entertaining, golf, reading, and spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and many friends.
Carey was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, the former Mary Gail Richardson and by his parents, Phillip Drew Shelfer and Mildred Barrett Shelfer.
Carey is survived by sons, Carey Bryan Shelfer II (Deana), John Ashley Shelfer (Yvonne); daughter, Mary Elizabeth Shelfer Little (Gates); grandchildren, Mary Findlay and Ellie Shelfer, Bailey and Andrew Shelfer, and Mary Frances and Sarah Little, all of Birmingham. He is also survived by his brother, Phillip Drew Shelfer, Jr. (Connie) of Jacksonville, Fla.
Pallbearers are Joe Baughan, Lan Richardson, Gordon Richardson, Bailey Shelfer, Andrew Shelfer and Joe Vengrouskie.
The Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 21 at First Presbyterian Church in Aliceville. Graveside Service will be held at 2 p.m. at Mesopotamia Cemetery in Eutaw, Alabama. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Thursday February 20 at the Dogwood Chapel in Aliceville. Skelton Funeral Home of Reform is directing.
