TUSCALOOSA | Clifton Shipman Penick, Sr., age 91, of Tuscaloosa, died June 22, 2014, at DCH Regional Medical Center. A service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. David Maginniss and Rev. Dr. Catherine Collier officiating. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. and burial at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park will follow the 2 p.m. service.
Clifton was preceded in death by his mother Ladie Fonville Penick and his father Clifton H. Penick; his sister Averette Lackey and his brother Drake Penick.
Survivors are his wife of 61 years, Amanda Ward Penick; son, Clifton Shipman Penick, Jr. (Pamela); daughters, Mollie Johnston (Robert) of Mobile, Ala. and Drew Baker (Donald); grandchildren, Mary Carleton Johnston, Robert Duncan Johnston III, Clifton Wesley Baker, Amanda Whitfield Baker and William Drew Baker.
Clifton Penick was born May 3, 1923 in Tuscaloosa, attended Tuscaloosa High School and graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He served in the Army Signal Corp during World War II in Belgium and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He worked many years for Gulf States Paper and subsequently retired from Alabama Power. Affectionately known as "The Captain" to his family and friends, Clifton loved the beach and was a great cook. He was extremely proficient in repair work on all things electrical and enjoyed the fellowship with his longtime friends at their weekly Breakfast Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Penick Guild, Christ Episcopal Church, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
