TUSCALOOSA | Eugene "Gene" Orndorff Procter, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on July 7, 2014 at the age of 89. Services will be held at Memory Chapel on Skyland Boulevard in Tuscaloosa on Tuesday, July 8 at 3 p.m., with the burial following at Memory Hill Gardens, Reverend Ben Jameson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours prior to the start of the funeral service at 1 p.m. Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, is directing.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, E. O. and Dillard (Jerry) Procter.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Martha Freeman Procter; brother- and sister-in-law, J. D. and Ardeth Freeman; daughters, Jan Whitt (Kenny) and Jeri Martin (Darnell "Marty"); son, Doff Procter (Laurel); nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
He attended the University of Texas in El Paso, where he was a member of SAE fraternity. He retired from Tuscaloosa Electric Supply Company, Inc. and Freeman Electric Company as part owner, and prior to that he was in radio broadcasting for many years. He served in the Army for three years during WWII, ending up at Northington Hospital in Tuscaloosa, playing in the 337th Army Band.
Gene accepted Christ in 1932 at the age of eight. He was a long time member of Northport Baptist Church where he was Deacon Emeritus and served in various capacities over the years, including: Minister of Music, choir member, soloist, church treasurer, Sunday school teacher, Board of Trustees member, and member of the church orchestra.
He played both French horn and trombone in everything from big bands to symphony orchestras and was a member of the Tuscaloosa Civic Chorus, performing both comedic and villainous roles in many musicals for many years. He was a charter member of the Tuscaloosa Sailing Club, loved all kinds of sports, especially University of Alabama football and gymnastics, traveling to many games all over the country. He enjoyed playing golf, church league softball, and racing sailboats and windsurfers. One of the greatest joys of his and Martha's married life was travel, both nationally and internationally.
A family man whose love of his wife and family was always a shining example to all who knew him, Gene was a model of what a Christian husband, father, and businessman should be. He was an incurable optimist who loved people and he, in turn, was greatly loved by all his family and many friends.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Kilgore, Shane Kilgore, Daniel Krueger, Zayne Price, Sam Calloway, Glenn Crow, Mike Hannah and Chuck Schmidt.
Honorary pallbearers are the Singles Ministry, Adult Choir & Orchestra, and Deacons of Northport Baptist Church, Darnell "Marty" Martin, Kenny Whitt, Barry Freeman, Jim Freeman, Hospice of West Alabama, the Home Instead staff, Jimmy Thomas, and Dr. Avinash Nichani and staff of the Veterans Administration Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Northport Baptist Church.
