George Fields Obituary

NORTHPORT | Reverend George W. Fields, age 85, of Northport, entered into his eternal home August 24, 2015, at UAB Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, August 28, 2015, at Tuscaloosa First Church of the Nazarene. Officiating ministers will be Rev. James Walker, Rev. William Holley, Rev. Kenneth Wyatt, Rev. Wesley Anderson, and Dr. Mark Berry. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2015, at Tuscaloosa First Church of the Nazarene.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Selleber Fields; brothers, Billy Fields, Phillip Fields and Kenneth Fields; and sister, Bonnie Fields.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Hazel M. Fields of Northport; daughters, Evelyn Melton (Gabriel) of Childersburg and Paula Peacock (Mike) of Duncanville; son, Randall Fields of Huntsville; brother, Donald Fields (Helen); sister, Joan Watts (Ronald); sisters-in-law, Serdia Fields and Betty Fields of Fayette; grandchildren, Melanie McIntyre, Candice Anderson (Wesley), Josh Peacock (Laura); step-grandchildren, Matt Melton, Marcus Melton (Lee Ann), Maggie Bell (Kevin); 14 great- grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
George Fields was born on August 8th, 1930 and grew up in Fayette County where he developed his love for all things "outdoors." His hunting and fishing trips with family became legendary as he retold each adventure. He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the Korean Conflict. He retired from B.F. Goodrich after 38 years where he was fondly referred to as "Preacher."
Side by side with his loving wife, Hazel, he served as Pastor in the Church of the Nazarene for over 40 years. During these years his love for God and others was exemplified not only in the sermons he preached but in his daily walk with his Lord and Savior. Never did he turn away from someone in need and his gentleness of spirit brought a peace and comfort to all who longed for a special word or prayer. Those who knew him have described him as "kind, gentle, spirit-filled, gracious, a testament of a life of prayer and Godly living." God enabled him to touch the lives of those around him even as he made the transition from this life to his eternal home where the Father welcomed him with the words "Well done, good and faithful servant."
He exemplified what it means to be a loving husband, caring father, devoted granddaddy, good friend. He will be missed, but memories and a legacy of a life well spent will live on in the hearts and lives of all who were privileged to know this great man of God.
Pallbearers will be Josh Peacock, Wesley Anderson, Thomas Fields, Tim Fields, Rusty Fields and Allen Averette.
Honorary pallbearers are church families of Tuscaloosa First Church of the Nazarene and Holten Heights Church of the Nazarene, pastors and congregations of Alabama South District Churches of the Nazarene, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Guin, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Reynolds, Bobbye Goins-Morrison, Jimmy Watts, Ashley McCall, Dr. and Mrs. William DeBell and staff, Dr. William Hill and staff, Lt. I keep my granddaddy's obituary on my dresser and it's one of the first things I see every morning before I go to work. It' been almost 3 years since he passed away but I can't bring myself to put it away, not just yet. Looking at it and seeing his smiling face reminds me daily of the kind of person I want to be. He was the kindest man and had the best heart of anyone I have ever known. His love for God and his family was evident in everything he did. He went above and beyond to show kindness even to people he didn't know. The tragedy of losing him is still fresh in my heart and mind but I have the assurance of knowing one day I will see him again in our heavenly home.
