TUSCALOOSA| Jo Ann Maxwell, age 67, of Tuscaloosa died March 12, 2014 at Hunter Creek Health and Rehab. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 17 in the Westervelt-Warner Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Charles Durham officiating. The family will receive friends afterwards. She will be buried next to her parents and brother in Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile, Alabama with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph Andrew Maxwell and Eunice Kroutter Maxwell and her brother Joseph Andrew Maxwell, Jr.
She is survived by cousins: Barbara Sa'Pereira (Augusto) of Tuscaloosa; Carolyn Anders (Larry) of Salem, IN; Jim Maxwell (Mary Ann) of Conyers, GA; Frank Maxwell (Louise) of Tuscaloosa, Farl Maxwell (Judy) of Garland, TX; David Barnett of Mobile and Madeline McCoullah of Lutz, Florida.
Jo Ann graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School. She attended The University of Alabama where she received a Bachelor of Arts in both Political Science and Spanish and a Master of Arts in Spanish. She also completed one semester in the PHD program at Tulane University in New Orleans.
In the 1980's, Jo Ann's interest in the art and literature of Latin America took her to Mexico where she both lived and traveled extensively. While there, she taught English to Spanish speaking business executives in international firms, to Mexican government employees and to students at a Catholic High School for girls.
Back in the U.S., Jo Ann taught Spanish in many places including as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at The University of Alabama, Department of Romance Languages; an Instructor of Spanish at Delgado Community College (Slidell, LA); Lecturer of Spanish at Xavier University of Louisiana (New Orleans, LA) and Adjunct Professor of Spanish at Birmingham Southern College.
Thank you to all who cared for her and prayed for her at the end of her life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa.
