TUSCALOOSA | Dr. Kathryn Ann Loper, age 62, of Tuscaloosa, died May 15, 2014, at home surrounded by her family after a battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church in Tuscaloosa. The family will receive friends following the service in the church's great hall.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Owney Childress "O.C." Hall and Mary Witt Hall, and father-in-law, E.E. "Jack" Loper.
Dr. Loper is survived by her husband, Robert Loper; her children, Trudy Loper and Mitchell Loper (Rachel); granddaughter, Carys Barr; sister, Dr. Lynda Crawford; nieces, Jenny Crawford, Kathryn Crawford and Erin Deely; great nephew, Brayden Deely; and mother-in-law, Gertrude Love Loper.
A native of Beckley, W.V., Dr. Loper earned her bachelor's degree followed by a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1977 from The Ohio State University. After beginning her veterinary career in private practice in Washington, D.C., she worked for the U.S.D.A. for the majority of her career.
Following her retirement, Dr. Loper devoted herself to numerous volunteer projects in her church and community. She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Tuscaloosa where she actively served as a Deacon, constituent of Presbyterian Women, and faithful member of the flower committee. A strong advocate of the importance of early learning, Dr. Loper volunteered at Head Start of Tuscaloosa, as well as Rock Quarry and Martin Luther King, Jr. elementary schools. She delighted in her gardening projects and bird watching at the family's farm, Greenebriar, which she co-developed with her beloved husband.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 900 Greensboro Ave., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, or Hospice of West Alabama.
