HOOVER | Walter B. Stumpff, Jr., age 84 of Hoover, Ala. and formerly of Tuscaloosa, Ala and Lewistown, Pa., died at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at his home in Hoover, Ala.

Born December 2, 1929 in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Walter B. Stumpff, Sr. and Jessie (Moore) Stumpff.
Walter was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Rev. Eric Ranum.
Walter is survived by his wife Doris Jean (Speck) Stumpff whom he married on June 14, 1952; his children, Susan Pritchett and husband Steven of Birmingham, Ala.; Dr. Nancy Lowenstein and husband Dr. Edward Lowenstein of Auburn, Ala.; MaryBeth Ranum of Coeur D'Alene, ID; John Stumpff and wife Dr. Tammy Stumpff of Bessemer, Ala.: nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sister, Nancy Rummel and husband Wallace of St. Petersburg, Fla. and their children and grandchildren.
A 1952 graduate of Purdue University, Walter was also a retired Lt. Commander of the U.S. Naval Reserves, serving from 1955 to 1958, stationed in Bermuda for a portion of the time.
He was a Chemical Engineer for B.F. Goodrich for 37 years, living in Brazil, Peru and Iran for 12 of those years. Walter loved to travel and working overseas provided a great opportunity to fulfill that passion. After retirement, he and Doris traveled throughout the country and to Alaska in their RV and went on several cruises and trips to see the sights around the world.
Walter attended the Community Highlands Bible Church, in Highlands, N.C. where he and his wife spent their summers for 20+ years. He enjoyed volunteering at the Highlands Visitors Center and the local Forest Service. In Tuscaloosa, he was an active member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church; was a member of the Civitan Club, Boy Scouts of America Executive Board in Tuscaloosa, Symphony Executive Board, and a volunteer at Druid City Hospital.
His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main Street, Lewistown with the Rev. Gary Roth officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery.
His family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
