TUSCALOOSA Elizabeth C. Cathey of Tuscaloosa died on September 17, 2013, at Hospice of West Alabama. She was born in Dumas, Arkansas, the daughter of Carl William Cathey (deceased) and Beulah Carnley Cathey (deceased). She leaves no living relatives.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 19, 4:00 p.m., at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. The Reverend Ron Wilson will preside. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, will direct.
Educated first in Camden, Arkansas, Miss Cathey earned a BA degree at Birmingham-Southern College and a MS degree at Louisiana State University with a major in mathematics. She served in the Department of Mathematics at The University of Alabama from 1946 until her retirement in 1982. She was named Assistant Professor Emerita.
During her tenure at the University, she was advisor to several student honorary organizations, including Mortar Board and Alpha Lambda Delta. She was a member of and faculty advisor to Pi Beta Phi. In 1956 she was a Charter member of Chapter I, P.E.O., where she served as Treasurer.
For several years she was a member of the University Club Board of Directors, and also of the University Concert Series Committee.
Elizabeth and her aunt, Dot Kershaw, enjoyed travel throughout the United States, Canada, and especially Europe. She cherished the freedom of travel. She also maintained large collections of recorded music and books.
She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, participating in many church activities. She funded the pipe organ in the Chapel of First Baptist - dedicating it in memory of her parents.
Elizabeth loved people and the close bonds of friendship. She was a southern lady in the truest meaning with a great appreciation of the history and beauty of the old world from which her ancestors came.
Throughout her life, Elizabeth had many close friends. Diana Bailey has been a friend who became like a daughter to her. Also, in support and concern, Larry and Margaret O'Neal, Ann and Robert VanHook of Little Rock, Arkansas, Doris and John Burton, Amy and Bill Walker, David Reynolds, Frank Gray and Mary Beth Cavert have enjoyed long friendships with Elizabeth.
Earnestine Johnson, Tempera Jenkins, Sherry Diggins, and Thanual Crawford have been loyal and devoted caregivers.
