TUSCALOOSA Ernest Leland Compton Sr., age 81, of Tuscaloosa, died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Mitchell and Dr. Archer Thorpe officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ernest was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Irene Turner Compton; his parents, Ernest Evans Compton and Alma Lee Clements Compton; and his grandson, Ernest Leland Compton III.

Ernest was born October 23, 1931, in Tuscaloosa County. He was educated in local schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 6, 1949, serving stateside and in England. At his discharge on December 18, 1952, he held the rank of Sergeant. After returning to Tuscaloosa, he worked for several local businesses, and spent over 30 years in various positions at Greene Beverage Company, retiring in 1997. Ernest was a huge fan of the University of Alabama, especially its football and baseball programs. He was also a NASCAR fan and enjoyed fishing for many years, and he was a member of Holt Baptist Church.

Survivors include his second wife of 15 years, Becky Gardner Compton; daughters, Sheila Robin Thorpe (Clarence) and Angelia Gaddis (Steve) of Tuscaloosa; sons, Ernest Leland Compton Jr. (Christy) of Southaven, Miss. and Henry O. Compton of Hoover; sister, Margie Lou Quinn of Birmingham; grandchildren, Craig Thorpe (Tracie), Casie Fowler (Daniel), Christopher Gaddis, and Kyle Gaddis, all of Tuscaloosa, and Elizabeth Compton of Southaven, Miss.; great-grandchildren, Jessica Thorpe, Haley Thorpe, Eli Fowler, and Charlie Robin Fowler, all of Tuscaloosa, and Oliver Wigley and Emily Ann Wigley of Horn Lake, Miss.; niece, Stephanie P. Livingston (Randal); great-niece, Amanda Livingston; great-nephews, Wesley Livingston (Amanda) and Seth Livingston (Hannah); and many other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Craig Thorpe, Daniel Fowler, Christopher Gaddis, Kyle Gaddis, Seth Livingston, and Perry Turner.

Honorary pallbearers are the host of great friends Ernest has left to mourn his passing.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675; Holt Baptist Church, 3101 Alabama Ave. NE, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404; or one's favorite charity.
