GORDO Joe William Baines, age 84, of Gordo, died June 28, 2010, at Pickens County Medical Center. Services will be 2 p.m. today, June 30, 2010, at New Hope United Methodist Church with Rev. Woody Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church.

He was preceded in death by his sons, John David Baines and Jimmy Dan Baines; his parents; and his brother-in-law, Davis Huffman.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Doris Huff Baines of Gordo, Ala.; his son, Ricky Baines (Deb) of Gordo, Ala.; his daughter-in-law, Judy Baines of Northport, Ala.; his sisters, Louise Huffman of Gordo, Ala. and Dorothy Mertz (Richard) of Gordo, Ala.; his brother, Dale Baines (Linda) of Gordo, Ala.; four grandchildren, Shannon Baines (Sharon), Sandi Wyatt (Heath), Sheri Boyington (Brian), and Leigh Ann Sherer (Mike); and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Baines was born June 18, 1926, in Gordo, Alabama to the late Sam W. Baines and Lucy Gertrude Plowman Baines. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving his tour in the Philippines during World War II and a route salesman for Dr. Pepper Bottling Company out of Reform for 22 years. Joe retired from the Pickens County Road Department and was involved with and contributed to the Pickens County Firemen's Association for many years. He served as the Fire Chief of the Zion Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and as chairman of the cemetery committee at New Hope United Methodist Church for many years.
Joe was a well known and respected man throughout the Pickens County area. He never met a stranger and was loved dearly by his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Pallbearers will be James Junkin, Glendon Junkin, Jamie Blakney, Kenneth Baines, Jason Baines, Dwight Herring, Ben Herring, and Jerry Smith.
Honorary pallbearers are past and present members of Zion Volunteer Fire Dept. and friends and neighbors of the Zion community.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Dwight Herring, 9769 Hwy. 159, Gordo, AL 35466.
