NORTHPORT Paul Edward Spruill, age 76, of Northport, Alabama, died November 22, 2013, at Hospice of West Alabama.

Born in the Liberty community of Pickens County, Alabama, Paul graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1954. A graduate of Gaylord School of Broadcasting in Nashville, Tennessee, he excelled in a 47 year career of radio broadcasting in West Alabama and Columbus, Mississippi. Known to his fans as “Tall Paul” on the Paul Spruill Going Home Show, his voice was recognized by many. In later years, he also enjoyed being the P.A. announcer for Tuscaloosa PARA youth athletics.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson Mayo and Mildred Spruill, of Northport.

Survivors include daughters, Kathy Spruill Chastine (Joe), and Khristina Spruill Motley (Reginald); and son, Kenneth Edward Spruill, all of Tuscaloosa; brother, Dr. Wilson David Spruill (Margaret), of Birmingham; granddaughters Alexa Chastine, Amelia Chastine, Claire Motley and Michaela Spruill; grandsons Christian Motley, Preston Motley and James Greyson Spruill, all of Tuscaloosa; and nephew, John David Spruill, of Franklin, Tennessee.

The service will be held on today, November 24, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Andrews Chapel in Ethelsville, Alabama, with Reverend Tim Plant officiating and Dowdle Funeral Home of Millport directing. Visitation will follow at the Spruill home in Liberty, Ala.

Active Pallbearers will be Ken Spruill, Joe Chastine, Reginald Motley, Christian Motley, Preston Motley, James Greyson Spruill, and John David Spruill.

A special thank you to Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, Dr. Regina Harrell, his caregivers at home for the last three months, and the staff of Hospice of West Alabama for their extraordinary kindness and care.
