Peggy, whom we all called Mama, was born April 6, 1941, in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama to the late John Dora Barrett and Stella Jones Barrett. Raised in the Elrod and Echola communities, Mama was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. She quit high school at the age of 16 to marry the love of her life, High. They promptly had five children and will always be remembered as the best parents any child could wish for. Although devastated by the loss of their oldest child Kenny in 1978, their faith, love, and strength carried them through, and they remained happily married for 44 years. After raising her children, Mama obtained her GED, then completed nursing school and worked many years at Glen Haven Nursing Home, retiring in 2001. Despite her handicap due to arthritis she still, at the age of 70, rose every morning to prepare breakfast for her grandchildren.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother who provided tremendous strength to and took great pride in her family. Another large piece of our heart is gone, but her memory is truly cherished. May she now rest in peace with Daddy.
Pallbearers will be Michael Kelly, Allen Kelly, Dennis Barrett, Lonnie Barrett, Paul Barrett, and Lannie Estes.
Honorary pallbearers are friends and family of the Echola community.
