R.A. Igou, Jr.

FORT PAYNE Dr. R.A. Igou, Jr., age 92, of Fort Payne, died Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at DeKalb Regional Medical Center. Services will be 2 p.m. today, November 29, 2013, at First United Methodist Church of Fort Payne with Rev. Ricky Smith, Rev. Robert Hayes, and Rev. Jim Russell officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church with Wilson Funeral Home directing.

Dr. Igou was a family practice physician for 59 years in DeKalb County. He was instrumental in the creation of the DeKalb General Hospital. He was past president of the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce, held almost every leadership position at his church, and taught Disciple Bible Study classes there for many years. He was also past president of the Fort Payne Lions Club, where he was a member for more than 65 years. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow, the high-est honor for Lions Club Inter-national. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a physician in the Panama Canal Zone during World War II.

Survivors are his sister, Hazel Igou Sauls, of Fort Payne; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Deema Igou, of Fort Payne; daughters and son-in-law, Susan Long, of Fort Payne, and Mary and Ben Shurett, of Boaz; grandchildren, Christy Brandon (Matt), Anna Shinabargar (Scott), Ellen Igou, Alex Igou (Lauren), Karen Stout, Chris Long, Charlotte Harkins (Scott), Brad Shurett (Kimberly), and Will Shurett (Katie); great-grandchildren, Margaret-Bailey Turner, Lili Brandon, Susanna Brandon, Benjamin Shinabargar, Will Stout, Emily Stout, Avery Burke, Sadie Long, Patrick Long, Drew Harkins, and Jay Shurett.

He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of more than 70 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First United Metodist Church's Christian Life Center Building Fund at 206 Grand Avenue North, Fort Payne, AL 35967, or to the Fort Payne Lions Club at P.O. Box 680032, Fort Payne, AL 35968.
