YORK - Robert Benjamin Webb, age 78, passed away on July 8, 2018 in York, Alabama. He was born March 19, 1940 at the Hill Hospital in York, the son of Sam L. and Ruby J. Webb.
Ben was predeceased by his parents and by his brother, Thomas Allen Webb.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Jonnie Averett Webb; by two sons, Thomas Averett Webb (Candace) of Livingston and Robert Benjamin Webb, Jr. (Carrie) of Auburn; by three grandchildren, Samuel Garrett Webb and Ty Henley Webb of Livingston and Warren Joseph Webb of Auburn; by his brother, Samuel L. Webb, Jr. (Ann) of Tuscaloosa; and by numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ben graduated from Sumter County High School in 1958 and went to work for the U. S. Post Office in York. He worked for the post office a total of thirty-seven years, thirty of those as a rural mail carrier in his native Sumter County, retiring in 1996. He loved his job and the people on his mail route, going out of his way on to see that every child along the way received the gifts sent by family and friends on Christmas day. Ben was widely known in his hometown as a man who could repair just about anything mechanical or electrical and took great pride in that. He was also a licensed welder and a "Ham" radio enthusiast, traveling around the country to numerous amateur radio meetings.
A great storyteller and mimic, Ben kept his family in stiches while presiding over Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. More than anything, he just enjoyed his family, gloried in their achievements, and was especially proud that he had a wonderful marriage that lasted well over half a century. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his three grandchildren and went out of his way to attend every event and game he could in which they participated.
A kind and generous man, Ben always had a smile and greeting for everyone. An active member of the York Baptist Church, he served for many years on the Board of Deacons and consistently attended the men's Sunday School class. Ben deeply valued his close friendship with the Rev. Leon Ballard, minister at the church for many years.
A memorial service honoring Mr. Webb was held at the York Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 10, 2018.
