BIRMINGHAM Walter Eugene Braswell, prominent Birmingham attorney and Tuscaloosa native, died Jan. 3, 2010, at the age of 55.

He is survived by his loving mother, Lucy Meadows Deason and his stepfather, Temd R. Deason of Tuscaloosa; his stepmother, Marie Braswell of Ruston, La.; his daughter, Alexis Lovejoy Braswell of Birmingham; his sister, Mary Margaret Fairbanks (Michael) of Ocean Springs, Miss.; two stepsisters, Janet Estrada (Charles) of Tuscaloosa and Carole Fenn (Scott) of Silver Spring, Md.; his nieces, Elizabeth W. Murphy and Meagan L. O'Dowd; his nephew, Daniel A. Pate; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Guy Braswell, Jr. of Ruston, La., and his brother, James Allen Braswell.

At age 15, Walter served as a Congressional Page for U.S. Senator John Sparkman. He received a BA in history and a JD degree from The University of Alabama and practiced law in Tuscaloosa for several years before becoming Legislative Assistant to U.S. Representative Claude Harris in Washington, D.C. When Harris was appointed United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama by President Clinton, Mr. Braswell served as First Assistant U.S. Attorney. Shortly after Harris' death, Mr. Braswell resigned and went into private practice. He was a devoted member of the Highlands United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. Noted for his keen intellect and quick wit, Walter will be missed by family and friends.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Tuscaloosa with Oliver Clark officiating. A brief burial service will follow at Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Michael S. Burroughs, Charles M. Coleman, Scott Fenn, Paul Gentry, Daniel Pate, and Dennis Shields.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Music Fund of Highlands United Methodist Church, 1045 South 20th Street, Birmingham, AL 35205.
