NORTHPORT Thomas Duane Banks, age 50, of Northport, died Oct. 8, 2010. Services will be 4 p.m. today at Sunset Funeral Home with Bro. George Shaddix officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He is survived by his wife, Catalina “Christy” Banks of Northport; a daughter, Donna C. Banks of Northport; a grandson, Nathan Thomas Taggart of Northport; his mother, Mary Lois Lee Dunn (Junior) of Northport; a sister, Catherine Banks of Brookwood; a brother, Roy Richard “Ricky” Banks of Tuscaloosa; his stepbrother, Steve Dunn (Nicole); his father, Roy Lee Banks of Tuscaloosa; a grandmother, Eunice Frostick (Earl) of Northport; aunts, Faye Moseley (Jerry), Nancy Newson, and Lisa Barksdale; uncles, Robert E. Lee (Donna), William “Bill” Lee (Jan), Donnie Wright, and Mike Lee (Judy); nieces, Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Herren of Brookwood, Catherine Victoria Mynhier (Jason) of McCalla, Valarie M. Turley (George) of Boaz, Natasha McCarver (Bill) of Tuscaloosa, and Rachel N. Banks of Tuscaloosa; and a host of cousins and other relatives.

His daughter is a University of Alabama student majoring in marine biology. He graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1978 and entered the Navy for three years. He served on the U.S.S. Midway with P2 Homeport during the Iranian hostage crisis. He graduated from Shelton State Jr. College. He worked for Empire Cola until they closed. He worked at Premier Service Co. for four years. He loved his family, especially his grandson, Alabama football, and fishing with Pete. He met his wife while in the Navy in the Philippine Islands. They have been married for 30 years. His wife works at Tuscaloosa County High. He was always rescuing homeless dogs and cats. He fed them, doctored them, cared for them and kept them at his home.

Pallbearers will be Jason Mynhier, Nick Taggart, Joseph Taggart, Jr., William “Bill” McCarver, Mike Lee, Julian “Pete” Peters, Bill Rice, and Doug Brown.

Honorary pallbearers are employees of Premier Service Co. and Albert Arenas.
