TUSCALOOSA Betty Clifton Pilegge, a long-time Tuscaloosa educator, died August 6, at Northport Medical Center.

A native West Virginian, she was the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Oma Baughman Clifton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a younger brother, William.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Joseph C. Pilegge of Tuscaloosa; a sister, Patricia Slade (Larry) of Kissimmee, Fla.; three nieces, Ann Roberts (Chuck) of Deckerville, Mich., Laura Marden (Ron) of Boone, N.C., and Judith Pilegge of Missouri City, Texas; and a nephew, Barry Stolzman (Jean) of Seattle, Wash.
A graduate of Western Kentucky University and Marshall University, Mrs. Pilegge taught in elementary schools in West Virginia, Maryland, and Alabama. She capped her career by serving as principal of Arcadia Elementary School in Tuscaloosa, retiring in 1990 after 23 years in that position.
A driving force in her life was the education of young children. Following her retirement, she devoted the next 22 years as a volunteer at the Children's Hands-On Museum.
Interment will be in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Children's Hands-On Museum of Tuscaloosa.
