Fred Riley Snyder, Sr.
TUSCALOOSA | Fred Riley Snyder, Sr., age 85, of Tuscaloosa, died April 4, 2014, at home. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel with Rev. Gary Bonner officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 9, 2014 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claudie and Bama Snyder; sisters, Judy Leonard and Beth Norris; and brothers, Claude Snyder and Floyd Snyder.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Jean (Brazell) Snyder; daughters, Deborah Yarbrough (Tommy), Sherry Smelley (David), Rebecca Kent (Daryl) and Lisa Brooks (Jeff); son, Fred Snyder, Jr.; grandchildren, Angela McDaniel, Lucy Yarbrough, Alishal Hensel (Brad), Nick Yarbrough (Beth), Chris Yarbrough, J.D. Brooks, Josh Brooks (Kayla), Jacob Brooks, Sara Brooks, Jarred Brooks, and Matthew Kent; and seven great-grandchildren.
Fred was a veteran of the Korean War. During his early years, he worked at the University of Alabama printing dept. before leaving to run Snyder Lawn & Garden and Snyder & Son Manufacturing. He was known as a selfless person always willing to help others.
He married the love of his life, Peggy Brazell in 1952. Together they raised five children. He had fond memories of working with his father at the Tuscaloosa Country Club as a child. He enjoyed working at home on his farm as well as fishing and spending time with his family.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Brooks, Brad Hensel, J.D. Brooks, Josh Brooks, Jacob Brooks, David McDaniel, Tommy Yarbrough and Nick Yarbrough.
Honorary pallbearers are Libby Beard, Albert Stewart, Dr. Strong and Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, Dr. Nichani and VA Home Based Care, Tanya Shuttlesworth, Vanessa Walton and Alacare Home Health/Hospice Care, former employees of Snyder Lawn & Garden, and Charles "Buddy" Mitchum.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Tuscaloosa VA Home Based Care and Alzheimer's /Dementia Foundation.
