TUSCALOOSA | Eileen McKibben Gabrielson, age 79, of Tuscaloosa, died April 27, 2014, at DCH Regional Medical Center. A private service will be held at a later date, with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider.
She is preceded in death by her parents, O. L. Kay and Florence McKibben, and sister, Susie McKibben King.
Survivors include the rock of her life, her husband, Dr. Fred C. Gabrielson of Tuscaloosa; their three devoted children, Karen Kelley of Tuscaloosa, Christine Chewning of Lexington, KY, and Mark Gabrielson of Brookwood; sister, Judy McKibben Newhouse (John); brother-in-law, Chuck King; grandchildren, Morgan Kelley, Hannah Kelley, Logan Chewning, Colton Chewning; and many nieces and nephews.
Eileen was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Penn. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Marietta College in Ohio. Following graduation, she began work at Roscoe B. Jackson Lab in Bar Harbor, Maine, where she and Fred both worked for Dr. George W. Snell Nobel Prize Winner in Genetics. She worked at the University of Alabama School of Law until her retirement in 2008. Eileen and Fred enjoyed hiking, bird watching, camping, and traveling. Traveling with her family was a tradition that brought her the greatest joy. She was a loyal supporter of both the Crimson Tide and the city of Pittsburgh sports, an avid reader, and dog lover. Eileen brought joy, love, and kindness to everyone she knew.
Honorary pallbearers are University of Alabama ABICLE work friends, Hospice of West Alabama, and neighborhood friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alabama Conservancy, 2100 1st Ave. N, Suite 500, Birmingham, AL 35203.
