She is preceded in death by her parents, James Frank and Marie Glover Stivender.
Survivors include her son, Michael Lambert Stivender Jr., of Memphis, Tenn., and special friends, Sue Floyd and Joyce Orr, both of Tuscaloosa.
Ann was born July 6, 1937, in Akron, Ala., to the late Frank and Marie Stivender. Following the death of her father when she was six years old, her mother remarried Jimmie Chance, who became a loving step father to her. She grew up in Hale County and graduated from Akron High School, where she was a cheerleader. After graduation in 1955, she attended Druid City Hospital School of Nursing, and graduated in 1958. For a short time she worked at Druid City Hospital as a Registered Nurse.
In 1960, she entered the United States Air Force, as a nurse, obtaining the rank of First Lieutenant, until she was discharged in 1964.
From 1964 until 1973, she worked at Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital in Demopolis, Ala., as both a staff nurse and a supervisor, until she moved to Mobile to attend Anesthesia School at the University of South Alabama. After graduating in 1975, she moved back to Tuscaloosa and began working as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at Druid City Hospital, which later became DCH Regional Medical Center. When she started, there were only six CRNA's in the Anesthesia Department. She worked in Surgery and primarily in Labor and Delivery, until her retirement in 2005. During her years in Anesthesia, she met one of her closest friends, Sue Floyd, who helped her raise her great-nephew, Michael Stivender. Michael was adopted as Ann's son. He was a young boy, who because of unfortunate circumstances, was orphaned at an early age. She and Sue became Aunt Ann and Aunt Sue to Michael, who has grown into a fine young man.
Ann was an avid sports fan, especially anything related to Alabama football, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, and girls softball. She eagerly awaited the start of each season every year. She loved life and what it offered her. Ann had a very loving heart. She would always look for the positive in any situation. On many occasions she gave the clothes off her back, food from her pantry, and money out of her pocket to those she knew in need, some of which she would never meet.
She was diagnosed with terminal cancer less than a week before her death after suffering from extreme pain for about two weeks. We are grateful that she is no longer suffering and God has taken her to be one of his angels.
Pallbearers will be Randy Kimbrell, Ed Moore, Andy Sample, Danny Glover, Mark Dengate, and Tracy Orr.
Honorary pallbearers are friends and neighbors of Greyston Court, Labor and Delivery staff and OB Physicians of DCH Regional Medical Center, Anesthesia staff of DCH Regional Medical Center, classmates and faculty of 1958 Druid City Hospital School of Nursing, friends and family of the Waysider Restaurant, Mark and Amy Dengate of Brentwood, Tenn., and their precious children, Faith, Ashley, and Emily, Charles and Bobbi Smitherman, Mike and Paula Smitherman, Randy and Jane Kimbrell and Chassiti Kimbrell, Joyce Orr, Ed and Darla Moore and family, Tracy and Linda Orr and family, Larry and Brenda Guy and family, Adam and Lori Beams and family, Judd and Myra Clem, members of the University Church of Christ, members of Mt.
