FREDERICK, Pa. Hubert E. Huckabee, 91, formerly of Tuscaloosa, died in his sleep Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at a nursing home in Frederick, Pa. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
The Guest Book is expired.
Hubert was preceded in death by his wife, Marie (Smelley) Brown Huckabee of Tuscaloosa; his son Michael Huckabee of McAllen, Texas, his sister, Helen Huckabee Self of Tuscaloosa; and four other siblings.
Hubert, a retired civil servant with the U.S. Postal Service, was the fifth of six children born into the musical family of Gladys and Edwin C. Huckabee, Methodist music educators. Growing up, he and his two sisters performed as the Huckabee Trio at various venues and on their daddy's radio show in Los Angeles, Calif., in the late 1920s. Their older brother, Donald, often accompanied them on the organ or piano.
Although his plans for a music career fell through, Hubert sang with United Service Organization shows while he was in the Navy during World War II. He later became a charter member of the Roger Wagner Chorale.
Following a nearly 50-year hiatus from music, Hubert sang one of the hymns his parents wrote at his sister's memorial service in 1998 at the age of 75. With a renewed passion, he then started singing every chance he got at churches around Tuscaloosa and with the Community Singers.
He and his wife, whom he met following one of his performances and married in 2004, were ardent supporters and volunteers with their church, Mount Olive Baptist Church, and many charities in the Tuscaloosa community. They loved to travel and go on cruises when they were not otherwise engaged with volunteer work.
Those who knew and loved him will sorely miss his love for music, keen wit and generosity.
Hubert is survived by his children, Diane Huckabee Mutmansky, Brett Huckabee, Brian Huckabee, Debra Huckabee Smith, Tony Huckabee, Clare Huckabee Price, Carla Huckabee Falkenstein, Tom Huckabee, K.T. Huckabee and David Huckabee; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Alabama Baptist Children's Home and Family Ministries, P.O. Box 361767, Birmingham, AL 35436.
