Susie was born October 3, 1953 in Pensacola, Fla. She grew up in Brewton, Alabama and graduated from T. R. Miller High School. She attended the University of Alabama where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. After college she lived in Nashville and Birmingham where she worked in retail for Parisian stores and as a Model for various fashion events and retail publications. Following her marriage in 1979 she moved to Tuscaloosa where she was a member of the Junior League of Tuscaloosa, The Mardi Gras Club, Kappa Kappa Gamma Tuscaloosa Alumnae Association, the Saint Andrew's Society of Tuscaloosa, and the Murphy Guild at Christ Episcopal Church.
Susie received her first treatments for a brain tumor in 1969 and very bravely fought a life-long battle with cancer. The Hayes family made a gift to UAB in 2008 naming the first-floor vestibule in the Hazelrig-Salter Radiation Oncology Facility in her honor. Susie's story was not only a story of survival but a story of happy perseverance. Her courage, her faith, and her positive attitude in fighting her disease will be a legacy for all who loved and knew her.
The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to caregivers Kaye Brock, Jackie Bakondy, Ella Smith, and to Hospice of West Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates any donations made to Christ Episcopal Church, 605 Lurleen Wallace Blvd. N., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404 or to the donor's favorite charity.
