I knew Mitchell starting in Tuscaloosa around 1975. I immediately recognized his genius in his painting. He used to visit Davey Williams and Ladonna Smith when a group of us lived in Glen Iris Circle in Birmingham, Alabama. I wonder what happened to his paintings? They should be treasured.

I have not seen Brad (as he was known growing up)In 10 or more years. His family lived behind us all my life.I always enjoyed his unique personality. He Introduced me to many of my favorite musicians.I remember siting in their garage and hearing music such as Jimi Hendrix,Cream,Stepenwolf,Mountan,Jethro Tull,Irn Butterfly, and much music that I never herd on radio in small a small town of mostly red necks. In retrospect he had a tremendous influence In my taste in music. He was unfortunately not apreciated in his home town.He was the first hippie in town, and was harased for having long hair when every body else conformed to fitting in.I remember how protective he was about his art and would not part with any of his creations, they were verry personal to him.He simply enjoyed creativity for it's own sake.I wish I could have spent more time hanging out with him.His parents moved to tusculisa for a couple of years while his mom got her masters degree. He found many like minded people there and decided to stay and finish high school and never returned except for a couple of visits he never drove a car.But I can't blame him for not coming back.He was one of the most entertaining people to converse with.He never cared about material things verry much. When his parents died ,he only wanted to get a few personal items. He did'nt care about even trying to do anything about the house. He was a huge influence in my childhood. We built forts and and had a lot of fun and many other exployts that
I have many fond memorys of him from my childhood. His father envented toys and there were many fun times .It sadens me that he died so young. He truly enjoyed life,I will miss him.He left a legecy that that i'm sure touched many people.Hope to see you on the other side.

I knew Mitchell back in the '70's when he was first discovering surrealism. I grieve for ma\y loss of him and wish him well. I know he is in a better place and all his trials and tribulations are behind. Farewell Mitchell, I'll see you again someday.

For me, surrealism is in my blood; it's not an effort.
Alejandro Jodorowsky It certainly applied to Mitchell. He lived the life he spoke of and few truly do. I will miss him.

Knew Mitchell since the early 70s. Best described as a "character" with a capital "C". But respected for his vision and devotion to surrealism.
"To be a surrealist . . . means barring from your mind all remembrance of what you have seen, and being always on the lookout for what has never been."
—Rene Magritte
"It is living and ceasing to live that are imaginary solutions. Existence is elsewhere."

Mitchell or Brad as I knew him, was my cousin. We were the same age and would see each when he and his family came to visit our grandparents. We lost touch with each other as
years went by but I saw him again when I went to Alabama in the early 70's. We reconnected
about 10 years and stayed in touch by phone until about a year ago. I didn't know how sick he was and only learned of death yesterday. Brad was one most intelligent and talented people I've ever known. I owe my passion for art, music, history, and science to him, a passion I passed on to my two my own chiidren. I will never forget him.

Rest in Peace, Doc. You made growing up, as a 13 yr old, VERY interesting. your caricatures in the fourth grade were phenomenal. At this moment, you have so many more colors to work with.?

Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision.

Out beyond ideas
of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field.
I'll meet you there.
When the Soul lies down
in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language
–even the phrase "each other"
–does not make sense.

And as he passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man, or his parents, that he should be born blind? Jesus answered, Neither did this man sin, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
