Joe Laycock Obituary

NORTHPORT | Joe Raiford Laycock, age 51, of Northport, died July 18, 2015, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North with Bro. Dan Williams officiating and guest speaker, Ricky Burch. Visitation will be two hours prior to services at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur H. Laycock; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Boyd and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Laycock.
Survivors include his wife, Belinda Hill Laycock; daughters, Courtney Laycock Waller (Michael) and Joey Elizabeth Laycock; brother, Lynn Laycock (Sheri); and mother, Carolyn Laycock.
Joey was born September 28, 1963 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He attended Holt High School and graduated with the class of 1981. Joey's love for music developed early and he learned to play the guitar, piano, bass, drums, and countless other instruments by the age of 13. Joey dedicated his professional life to music and, specifically to the development of young new artists in the Tuscaloosa area. During his 31 year musical career he recorded multiple albums, served as a sit-in musician, sold musical instruments, and was in multiple bands, most notably Silver Creek and MOJO Trio. He served as a mentor and inspiration to countless young artists. He garnered the respect of all affiliated with the music industry in Tuscaloosa and the surrounding areas. He was largely regarded as the best guitarist in the area.
Joey met his wife, Belinda, in November of 1984, and they were married on August 9, 1986. He loved her deeply for 29 years and remained an adoring husband and soulmate to her throughout their life together. Their 2 daughters, Courtney (27) and Joey (19), were his heart. He lived and breathed for them. Despite his many personal and professional accomplishments, Joey regarded his proudest and happiest moments as those he spent with his girls and celebrating their lives and milestones.
Joey's wife, Belinda, owns and operates a family daycare home that provided Joey another outlet to touch lives. To those children in her care, he was known as "Pop", a kind and gentle man who was adored by the children he helped raise. Among these were his 3 godsons, Zachary, Alexander, and Matthew Nelson, and his loving niece, Leslie Laycock. Joey also played the role of mentor and role model to his 2 nephews, Lance and Logan Hill.
In all areas of his life, Joey loved deeply and served others. He lived by the philosophy that all people should be valued, no matter their station in life. Because of this, that love was returned and all who met him felt only the fondest regard and the deepest respect. We, the family and friends of Joey Laycock, will love and miss him forever.
Honorary pallbearers are Tom Hill, Ricky Burch, Chuck Sawyer, Doug Nelson, Micah Hill, Barry Brown, Brad Bricken, Buddy Wyatt, Bradley Wyatt, Roger Burroughs, Mickey Pierce, Barry Herring, Jacky Sims, and Mike Chain.

I can't believe that I am just now hearing about this. I have actually been in the hospital and kinda "out of touch" for a while. I have known Joey for 35 yrs./ I got chills every time I heard him play and the smile was so contagious. I am not a big fan of bars, but I believe Joey's calling was to be there, and he answered the call. His witness was unbelievable. He offered to teach my son guitar. I can't remember why we didn't, but I'm sure it was because his plate was already full!! He is with God now...there's no doubt in my mind. We will al see you soon. I am praying so hard for his wife and girls. The sadness I feel, isn't a teardrop in a bucket compared to the grief they feel. God loves us promised he will never put more on us than we can bear..PLEASE take comfort in that!!

Joey was always very kind and helpful to me. When I was a young teenager he helped me with guitar gear when he still worked at a record store (Musicland) in the mall. He also got me into audio production 15 years ago when he gave me a copy of the software that he used. There was no reason he should have gone out of his way to encourage and help a random kid like me, that just goes to show the great character that he possessed. Over the years his advice and friendliness was something I always looked forward to when going to whichever local guitar shop in which he was working. Relating stories about his father Arthur (he used to give me rides at the river in his Jet-Boat when I was a child) or just talking about gear, he was always willing to spend some time chatting when I saw him. I will truly miss Joey. I have a lifetime of memories that I will never forget. You will be missed.

I am at a loss. Have only met a few people in my 57 yrs that were as kind and sensitive to others as Joey . We shared a love of music and during our conversations over the last 15 years he always had encouraging words. I have always admired Joey and always will. He is now playing leed in gods band.

When you have a true friend you know it. It seams like yesterday when you talk, even if has been years. Joey was a friend like that. He was never a slave to the hurry of this world. He always had time for you, and apparently everyone else he knew and meet. My life is truly better from having had Joey in it. I have never meet his girls (I did know Courtney as a baby :)), but I did know them from the conversations we had about them. He loved his girls and Belinda so much. Praying for the family, for God's peace & comfort.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the Laycock family tonight and the upcoming weeks. Times will be tough, but through God we will move forward. We have to, that's what our loved ones would want us to do. I will miss you cuz! Growing up I've always admired his talent, his smile, and his always positive attitude. Throughout the years as we would go watch him play he NEVER failed to call me over, put his arm around me and ask how is Helen ( my grandmother)How is your pops? Joey was always making sure everybody was ok. I would always tell him I love you cuz. Then he would continue to rock the house smiling from ear to ear. We lost a great person this week and as everyone looks on the news and Facebook you can see what this man left behind. He touched so many and there are so many with nothing but great stories to tell. I pray for his wife, daughters, brother, and above all Carolin. May God be with each of you. RIP Joey.......

I've known Joey most all of my life! He was a great friend to my family but especially to my sister, Lisa. Most recently on my 50th birthday in May, Joey asked me thru FB message if I wanted to fight. LOL that's because as kids he would always be in my swing and I would have to fight him to get him out!!! I never ran into Joey that he wasn't smiling. The outpouring of love in his death is a testimony to his life. He was a special, one of a kind person! Lynn an Mrs. Carolyn, Belinda, Courtney and Joey...my heart breaks for your loss. My prayer is that you find peace in knowing how much he loved each of you and his zest for life. Love you Joey! RIP

Over the past few days I have heard so many of our customers speak so highly of Joey. He left a great impression on all those whose lives he touched. In this world with so much negativity, he was such a great inspiration. I feel honored to consider him a friend. May God help you find peace within your hearts.
