Roger LAKE Obituary

67, of White Bear Lake Died November 29 Roger was born on June 6, 1945 in Hibbing, MN, to the late Eino and Ailee Lake. After graduating from Hibbing High School, Roger earned his B.A. in Biology from Macalester College and his M.A. in Wildlife Biology from the University of Minnesota. After short stints at the U.S. Forest Service and Army Corps of Engineers, Roger did wildlife and plant research for the MN Department of Natural Resources until retiring in 2003. He received an award from the MN Native Plant Society for his research on rare plants, which continued after retirement. In addition to his work with the DNR, Roger contributed substantially to the quality of Minnesota's waterways through his long-standing involvement with the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District. He was part of the advisory team for the district formation in 1975, served on its Board of Managers since 1978, and was its Board president since 1983. He was also instrumental in forming the Metro Chapter of Minnesota Watershed Districts and served on the Minnesota Association of Watershed Districts Board of Directors and Metro GIS Policy Board. An avid outdoorsman, Roger truly loved Minnesota's wild places. He spent many hours hunting, fishing, skiing, canoeing, or just walking through the forest, and a hike with him was a truly educational experience. He is survived by his son, Daniel of Plattsburgh, NY; his sister, Arlyn Brock of Crystal, MN; and his nieces Jan Girod and Karla Brock Stuber of Kennesaw, GA, and Marlyn Faue of Elk River, MN. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Roger's life on Saturday, July 13 from 10am to noon at Battle Creek Regional Park (off Upper Afton Road) in the picnic shelter. Refreshments will be served as we socialize and share stories of the Roger we knew and loved.
