Memories and Condolences
for John CAVE

Not sure what to say?

Skip--you enriched anyone's life once you came in contact. I clearly remember the day you and Donna arrived in Durango. We immediately connected and had some really good adventures during your tenure. You were a faithful colleague at the Fort and were a valuable team member. I'll always remember the fun we had our our 'First Annual Mardi Gras party"--still have pictures that would probably bring a lot on the black market. RIP my friend and hope they have some good hunting opportunities where ever you are.

December 2, 2012

If the measure of a man's life is how many people he affected in his life, then Skip's life was a very full one indeed. Over the past 40 years that I have know him. He always made time to visit, to listen, to ask about my life, to see how I was, to see and to help me handle my problems. Now today I know how small my problems are. If only I understood more and tried harder to listen to his problems rather than his advice. If only I knew more of his daily struggles, I could have helped, but it was so much like Skip to not want to burden anyone else, not want to ask for help, not to want to burden anyone except himself.

I will always remember and miss so much the simple talks we had, the lessons He taught me that continue to carry me through my struggles. The lessons he so often reminded me of was ‘don't dwell in the past and in the problem, focus on the solution on changing the outcome & don't burden yourself with a mistake of the past but of the best solution moving forward'. ‘Enjoy your day on the water & enjoy your life, you worry too much', he would often say and perhaps he worried not enough. If only he had taken his own advice. If only we had another chance, another day. If only I had known it was to be our last conversation I would have never let it end, if only…

We say goodbye today with heavy hearts for our friend, a Teacher and a Mentor who is now gone, but whose lessons will live forever.

I love you, Skip.

"Skip" was my boss at Fort Lewis College for many years. He was a good administrator, a fair Dean and excellent leader. He and I would visit "after hours" and talk hunting and fishing experiences around SW Colorado. He was a professional and at the same time a down to earth personal friend. I have not seen him in many years but my time with him will be remembered fondly. Upon my retirement in 1992 he and I spent time in New Orleans recruiting my replacement - and enjoying the fishing and local entertainment. God Bless you Skip and my prayers are with Skip's entire family.

Jeff, Shelby, Carol - It was an honor to know and work with Skip. He was a great friend and mentor to me. He was incredibly multi-talented (administrator, teacher, air conditioner repairman, shrimper, fisherman, mechanic, etc.), and clearly a loving and proud father and grandfather. Skip was also one of the nicest individuals I have ever known. He will be missed.

I was so sorry to hear this about Professor Cave. Skip was always great and fun to work with at Fort Lewis College! I never forget when he bought dinner for 12 of us at the Red Snapper in Farmington after a field trip. He kidded us saying all the Business teachers were rich.

Skip and I met on an elk hunt in or around 1990 and have been friends every since. I believe he took his first bull on that trip and made a bolt action big game rifle sound like a semi automatic rifle. I have never seen anyone operate a bolt any faster. The amazing thing is that Skip hit that bull on every shot. He was always quite the marksman. He and I enjoyed several more elk hunts over the years. Skip, I'm sure gonna miss you.

Skip was a colleague at Fort Lewis College. He did a wonderful job as dean of the School of Business Administration. He was fun to work with as he had such a gifted sense of humor. When we did our big recruiting trips he was always meeting with prospective students and their parents. He knew the importance of a dean helping in the recruiting process. He did a great deal to assist our admission and retention efforts. He valued education and reached out to those first generation students. He often shared with our students that he was the first in his family to go to college. I remember him telling humorous stories about his family. He was especially proud of his children. His eyes would sparkle when he talked about his hunting and fishing trips to Louisiana.

He was a genuine person and enjoyed life. I feel blessed and honored to call him a friend and I considered him a valued colleague.

I will miss him and thank him for all his years of dedication and service to Fort Lewis College. He truly was one of a kind.

Dear Carol & Jeff & Donna, Shelby & Stephen. It is an honor to express our respect for "Skip" because we knew him through Jeff. You can take great comfort in knowing Jesus knew this day would come and He is beside you this very moment. On the morning that I conducted my father's funeral I wrote this poem that I share with you. My father was 56 years young. "To rest in Christ no greater peace can mortal man dare ask. To lean on Him. . . this is our daily task. To trust His will when all about looks dark and cold and chill. To obey His voice till brightness fills the sky and Christ Himself will come again and give the reason why." Jesus knew "Skip" He created him and He is your comforter and peace this moment.

With respect,
