NEWSTROM, Jim
Age 60. Born in Lincoln, NE, to Maxine and George Newstrom. Grew up in Omaha, graduated from Westside High (Go Warriors!) and received his BA and MBA degrees from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. In college, his time in Greece as part of the Experiment in International Living helped shape his young world view. He started his career in finance at Mutual of Omaha, including a 6-mo stint in Bournemouth, England, to help establish a newly acquired subsidiary. Jim moved to Minneapolis in 1988 to work for Coopers & Lybrand as a CPA and auditor. He then became director of finance for Rehab Dynamics, followed by 10 years with Sholom Homes, 9 as CFO. He then became CEO of Regency Hospital in Golden Valley for 3 years before leaving to work in finance at North Memorial Hospital. He then moved to Northwest Anesthesiology, where he was director of finance until February of 2016. Jim was a local leader in the LGBT equality movement as a 20-yr volunteer with the DC-based Human Rights Campaign. He eventually became a national leader, serving for 6 years on its Board of Governors. His HRC work was marked by a relentless awareness of inclusiveness and diversity, and he was quick to welcome new volunteers with open arms. He was a lover of beauty - visual arts, music, architecture, gardens, mountain hikes, seaside retreats, and sunsets. And he was loved by children, always ready to teach them games or a card trick. As the 7th child of a very large family, Jim's identity was shaped by growing up with 6 brothers and 5 sisters. From this, he learned the arts of both compromise and persuasion! Preceded in death by his parents, survived by husband Les Bendtsen, siblings Sharron Mathieu, Ann Alden, Bill Newstrom, Joan (Ron) Mahrt, Debby (Dan) Tosoni, Larry Newstrom, Greg (Penny) Newstrom, Bob (Nancy) Newstrom, Nancy (Ken) Stewart, Mark (Vicky) Newstrom and Doug (Kristin) Newstrom. Memorial service to be held on Friday, July 8, at 4:00 pm at McNamara Alumni Center at the U of M, 200 Oak Street SE, Minneapolis. Memorials preferred to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
